This course usually lasts six days, a total of 40 hours study with three exam papers. It can be covered as a series of short sessions, or as an intensive week-long course. We are open to discusing your requirements. It is recommended that you have passed this course before taking an RYA Yachtmaster Practical Exam.

The course is normally taught by our principal instructor who has over 50,000 miles sailing offshore, including Atlantic crossings.

At Jolly Roger Sailing we use the RYA training materials and try to integrate your lessons with real charts and almanacs so you get a feel for the equipment you will be using on your own boat.

Course Topics Include:

  • Position fixing
  • Course shaping and plotting
  • Tidal knowledge
  • Use of almanacs and admiralty publications
  • Electronic position finding equipment

  • Customs and excise regulations for cruising abroad
  • The course allows some time for revision of the basics and then moves on to advanced navigation techniques.
