  • This course last usually lasts 5 days, a total of 40 hours study with three exam papers. It can be covered as a series of short sessions, or as an intensive week-long course, we are open to discuss your requirements. Passing this course is a prerequisite to have done this course before taking an RYA Yachtmaster Practical Exam.


    At JRS we use the RYA training materials and also try to integrate your lessons with real charts and almanacs so you get the feel for the equipment you will be using on your own boat. As with the Day Skipper shore based course, the RYA’s specially designed chart plotter software will be used during the course to give you a realistic taste of modern electronic navigation.

    Course topics include:

    • Position fixing

    • Course shaping and plotting

    • Tidal knowledge

    • Use of almanacs and admiralty publications

    • Electronic position finding equipment

    • Taking and interpreting forecasts

    • Plotting weather systems

    • Weather predictions using a barometer and by observation

    • Collision regulations

    • Customs and excise regulations for cruising abroad

    • The course allows some time for revision of the basics and then moves on to advanced navigation techniques.
