Why Choose This Course?
This is not just another radio course — it’s the RYA Short Range Radio (VHF) Certificate training that sets the standard. At Jolly Roger Sailing, we deliver the most hands‑on, engaging, and professionally run SRC course in Southampton.
-
Real iCOM Training Radios – Unlike many providers, we use genuine iCOM radios (with transmitters disabled and networked for training). You’ll gain authentic, practical experience that prepares you for real‑world use.
-
Small Class Sizes – While the RYA allows up to 12 students per instructor, we keep numbers low to maximise individual attention and ensure you leave confident and competent.
-
Expert Instruction – Delivered by seasoned instructors with thousands of miles at sea, including Atlantic crossings. You’ll learn from professionals who understand the realities of maritime communication.
-
Comprehensive Preparation – You’ll receive the RYA handbook and a pre‑course quiz to ensure you arrive ready, covering the required 3 hours of prior study.
This is the only SRC course worth booking if you want to walk away with genuine confidence, practical skills, and the legal qualification required to operate VHF/DSC radios.
About the Qualification
The RYA Short Range Certificate (SRC) is the minimum legal requirement to operate VHF and VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC) equipment on any British‑flagged vessel voluntarily fitted with a radio. This includes both fixed and handheld sets using international channels.
A radio is one of the most vital pieces of safety equipment on board. Correct use can save lives — incorrect use can block a Mayday. This course ensures you know the difference.

Testimonials
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "We did a VHF radio course with Roger. He knew the subject matter well and helped us learn the practical bits across the course of the day. Both myself and my husband passed our exam and we are very happy with the course and Roger's instruction." — Alice Madden‑Curtis, via Google
