20th October Short Range Radio (VHF) Course

RYA Short Range Radio (VHF) Course

Hythe, Southampton

Build the confidence to use your VHF when it really matters.

Your VHF radio is one of the most important pieces of safety equipment on board. Knowing how to use it properly — particularly in an emergency — can make all the difference.

At Jolly Roger Sailing, our RYA Short Range Certificate (SRC) course combines expert tuition with plenty of practical, hands-on radio work. You won't simply learn what the buttons do — you'll practise using the radio and learn how to communicate clearly and correctly in real-world situations.

Learn the skills that could save a life

A VHF radio isn't just another piece of equipment on your boat.

In an emergency, you need to know what to say, which channel to use and how to send a distress alert quickly and correctly.

During the course you'll gain practical experience with:

  • Real ICOM training radios – networked for realistic hands-on practice
  • Mayday, Pan Pan and Sécurité procedures
  • Digital Selective Calling (DSC)
  • GMDSS and maritime communications
  • EPIRBs and SARTs
  • Correct radio procedures and terminology
  • Routine ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore communications
  • Emergency and distress procedures

Our training radios have their transmitters disabled but are networked together, allowing you to practise realistic radio scenarios safely in the classroom.

⭐ Small Classes. Practical Training. Expert Tuition.

We deliberately keep our class sizes small so that you get plenty of hands-on experience and individual attention.

You'll be taught by experienced sailing instructors who understand how VHF communication works in the real world, not just from a textbook.

With extensive offshore sailing experience, including Atlantic crossings, we bring practical knowledge and real-life examples into the classroom.

Everything you need to prepare

Before your course you'll receive:

✔ Official RYA Short Range Radio Handbook
✔ Pre-course study information and quiz
✔ Guidance on the required preparation
✔ Practical experience using ICOM training radios
✔ Expert tuition throughout the course

We want you to arrive prepared — and leave feeling confident, capable and ready to use your radio on board.

What is the RYA Short Range Certificate?

The RYA Short Range Certificate (SRC) is the internationally recognised qualification for operating VHF and VHF/DSC marine radio equipment.

It is the minimum qualification required to operate marine VHF/DSC equipment on UK-flagged vessels that are voluntarily fitted with a radio.

Whether you're a new boat owner, preparing for your first offshore trip or simply want to refresh your knowledge, the SRC gives you the skills and confidence to communicate effectively at sea.

The Course & Examination

The course takes approximately 8–10 hours, including the examination.

You'll learn the theory and then put it into practice using the training radios.

The course concludes with the RYA SRC assessment, consisting of practical radio scenarios and a short written assessment conducted by an RYA examiner.

On successful completion, you'll receive your RYA Short Range Certificate.
